Brake Repair for Windham, ME

As far as safety is concerned, there are few parts of your vehicle more important than the brakes. Brakes need to be checked and maintained regularly in order for them to function properly.

Sometimes, it’s pretty clear that there is something wrong with your brakes. Other times, it isn’t so easy to tell.

If the brake light on your dashboard comes on, do not ignore it. While it could just mean you’re due for an inspection, it can also be your vehicle’s diagnostic system indicating an issue.

If you hear a high-pitched whine when applying the brakes, it’s most likely the brake pad wear indictors telling you it’s time to replace the pads. The sound occurs from the pads contacting the rotors. If the rotors become damaged, it’s a much more expensive fix than just replacing the pads.

A grinding sound when applying the brakes can mean several things. It could mean something is caught in the caliper, which is an easy fix. However, it could mean rotor damage or a lack of lubrication.

If your vehicle shakes when you apply the brakes, it could be due to an uneven rotor.

If your brakes ever feel “spongy” or “soft” when applying them, i.e. the pedal sinks all the way to the floor, seek service immediately. There could be a problem with the master cylinder or it could mean air and/or moisture is getting into the brake line. You should also seek immediate attention if you smell burning while braking. This can mean an overheated system, and boiling brake fluid can cause brake failure.

Common Brake Repairs

  • Brake Pads - These are the most routine brake repairs that are done. This usually needs to be done every 10,000 to 20,000 miles. Your brake pads are the most common brake repair.
  • Rotors - Your rotors do last a while, they don't need to be replaced as often as your brakes. You should check them every oil change to monitor them for replacement.
  • Caliper - Your calipers apply pressure to the brakes so that you can stop. They don't fail very often but they can if other brake repairs are not done regularly.
  • Brake Fluid - Your brake fluid lines can crack and leak out fluid. This makes it extremely difficult to stop. Brake lines should be fixed immediately. Every once in a while, it is recommended that you change your brake fluid.
